In 2019, our first Baja director, Karl Hus, embarked on a journey to Phoenix, Arizona, to retrieve a donated “Tension Tent.” Despite the blistering August heat—114°F—and a truck without air conditioning, Karl saw potential in the 50’ x 120’ tent, even if its future use was uncertain at the time.
Sadly, Karl passed away from COVID-19 on January 1st, 2020. In 2021, when the tent was erected as a temporary dining and meeting facility, we named it “Hus Hall” in his memory.
Initially, the plan was to use it for 3-5 years, the expected lifespan of the vinyl panels, before constructing a permanent replacement. However, as Hus Hall came to life, it quickly became much more than just a temporary structure.
Over the past three years, thousands of people have experienced the magic of this space. From volunteer teams and outreach programs to student leadership conferences and Quinceañeras, Hus Hall has become the heart and soul of the Hope Center.
In early 2024, recognizing the importance of Hus Hall, we decided to explore ways to preserve it and make it a permanent fixture. After consulting with engineers and local project managers, we developed a plan to reinforce the structure. This includes adding structural bracing, replacing the vinyl panels with steel roofing that mimics Spanish tile, and extending the south end for additional space—housing offices, build supplies, and vehicle maintenance. This will expand Hus Hall to over 7,300 square feet.
Remarkably, the estimated cost for this project is only $50,000 USD—far less than the $250,000 needed for a new building.
With a donor match up to $25,000, reaching this goal is within sight. Our donors are heroes to the more than 10,000 people who have found purpose and hope in Hus Hall. By joining this incredible group of world-changers, you can help build a lasting legacy that will impact generations to come. Together, we can continue to fight the effects of systemic and generational extreme poverty.
